What´s looking good in January - February

Amongst rhododendrons, the excellent plant R. Yellow Hammer is still confused and in flower.

And the semi-deciduous R. dauricum Midwinter has produced little trusses of reddish-purple flowers. It´s fragrant foliage will appear later, turning to a purple-bronze in winter time.

Later forms of Camellia sasanquas are in full flower, especially the rosy-red Hiryu.

Their flowers are never very big and are mostly single or semi-double. They come in shades of red, pink and white, and most are slightly scented.

Some of the early Camellia japonicas are beginning to show colour and flower.

Camellia Noblissima has always been one of the first into flower, and is a favourite amongst men for use in a button hole on a jacket, for that New Years Eve party if you can find one that has not be frosted.

Camellia Gloire de Nantes is also starting with rich pink double flowers, and C. St Ewe is the first of the single pink williamsii hybrids, very reliable and profuse, over a long season.
